Nothing like a heated debate 
....just one question Kep....could you define 'postwork'
and 'effect'.....I take it the map posted with no
postwork has to be recogniseable as a map....

The competitions are to show how DJ shines right? My vote is for minor details including fixing little gaps and maybe putting on some reflections or shines / shadows.
Maybe there should be a n00b section added to the contest as well? That might get more of the shy people mapping and could also attract feedback from more experienced folks which would help the new people improve. Just a thought.

Still confused 
...I was born confused, so nothing new....but....
would I still be able to create original art pieces
like I did for my first competition map...or am I limited
to what is in the artpacks and what has been posted
on the forums?
.....can I do my map then post my art afterwards?
....All I want to do is do a map....I use techniques
approptiate to what sort of map I want to make....
some are entirely DJ, some 50/50 and some purely in
Gimp.....Why can't we just have a mapping contest (full stop).....otherwise you will limit peoples inventiveness.

Let's see ...
Art pieces you create to use in your maps are PREwork. That includes shadow blobs and light effects. When you start creating map-specific shadow/light pieces it becomes a bit shady, just like huge blurry pieces and such.
After you export the map, the POSTwork begins.
And please do post your new art afterwards
I think we have said it often enough that since this is a DJ forum, the contest is about making DJ maps, not maps with other programs. There are other sites for that ... like the Cartographers Guild. Of course we could create a general map contest, but that would not be supported in the same way (no prize money or spotlight).

Thanks Kep......just asking....will get on and finish my map...
...post work will include shading and lighting, with
a bit of blurring to create height....

I agree, and I am hoping to see a Supercaptain map this time, and a Halebop map, and a Benwax map, etc. etc. (to many to mention)and maybe even a Kepli map

Kep only maps during a total eclipse....I have just
gotten over the shock that ae was entering a map
