Hi folks...

Just to show I have'nt been idle, here is the start of my
latest project. Its a ruined church on a hilltop, its
a staging post for my PCs as they explore the surrounding
lands.

First up, a quick layout sketch:

Throw a couple of textures over this to get the basic
terrain:

looks OK, now for the cool bit...wip it through Bryce..

...and that is the way I get that cool 3d feel, if anyone
has Bryce, give it a try, with practice you will be amazed
at the results...

Started the top ruin so will post a WIP when I have the
time...

Excellent work Cisti. How long did it take to do the walls in DJ before exporting?

This is just so ultra cool! Thanks!!

I really love the way you show off the big leaps of your WIP. I bought Bryce recently but my computer died and I'm having to work toward getting a new one bought and seeing stuff like this really adds to my impatience!

Not long at all, just remember to turn raised walls &
shadows off before erasing bits, otherwise it can take
forever.

You can check your progress now & again by turning them back on.

I didn't know you could do that in Bryce. I have it and don't really use it, but now that I know, I'll be sure to try. Darn that's awesome!

That landscape is phenomenal Cisti!
Great to see you get a chance to post your art again.

Awesome job so far! Geewhiz, looks like it could be worth expanding the range of my tools.

May I ask how long it took you to import the texture map into Bryce and adjusting the heights?

After many months tinkering in Bryce, I now use saved
templates for different effects (i.e snow, ice, smooth
rock etc.) so importing into Bryce takes a few minutes.

The hard part is actually making your 3d terrain, if
anyones interested this is what the terrain editor looks
like in Bryce:

I draw on the terrain canvas while looking at the image in
the 3d preview window. Its a height map, so its a greyscale
image; white being high and black low.

While I am at it, here is where you edit the texture:

The first texture (top right) is a straight import of the
basic terrain map I did, the second is the same image
but is being used for ambience, the third ('rockie') is
being used as the bump map, its a preset texture within
Bryce.

Sounds complex, but have a play around for awhile. Forget
the instruction manual....

Sometimes I think maybe I should do a tutorial on this...
but it might end up rather complicated...I will have a go,
try to keep it simple

A beginning tutorial would be awesome. just enough to get started on simple things would go a long ways towards using it. The problem with programs like that are the initial learning curve. once you understand how the software really works, the fine tuning is easy.

Great. Just as I'm starting to have fun with Dundjinni I'm reminded of how much fun Bryce is, too.

Is that the latest version of Bryce? I haven't used Bryce in a decade, yet the screenshots look exactly as I remember.

EDIT: Wikipedia informs me that Bryce 5.5 is freeware. I request that someone inform me that it's completely awesome.

Welcome aboard LeadPal

The material lab hasn't changed much or at all if I remember correctly.

Happy mapping

Look who the cat dragged in!

I don't know if Bryce 6 is the latest version or not, but that's what I have and the setup is identical to what Cisti posted.

Woohoo!! I finally have my new computer parts on order
and plan to be toying with things again very soon. I
hope you find time to get the tutorial done. (Insert
shameless begging plug here).

Love your maps!! (Insert much deserved praise here).

I've been messing around with bryce again and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to import my picture to edit the elevation. The only thing i've found that even gets my mao in is open image and it just gives me a little square of it and i can't seem to edit it.

Cisticola could some time when you have time explain how to at least get it to the point of being able to edit it. Nothing fancy just a go to file, then import and etc...   Maybe i could t least stop pulling my hair out over that part.

lol....yes it can be frustrating Erdrix...

...and its not easy to explain either...lol.

here is a clue though:

Materials Lab (image posted at top of this post)
Bump height (press A,B,C etc until box appears at right)
Right box (press top left, second button)
Double click empty square (now import your image)

you don'y have to use bump height, have a play around
