Hello mapping object geniuses.
I'm currently running a Spycraft play-by-post set in near-future Hong Kong, and I am suddenly finding myself in need of some things that I can't find anywhere and I'm not sure how to make.
Basically, I need some different 'capital-size' modern ships (single map objects rather than a map) for the next scene of the current mission (they're going to be in a gunboat battle against some pirates in Victoria Harbour). A few different tankers and freighters would be ideal. They'd look something like this, but top-down:
I'm artistically challenged, but I do have Photoshop Elements and GIMP loaded on my PC, so if no one has time for this I will take a link to some good tutorials as consolation and try to figure it out on my own. I found some great mapping objects for smaller ships on Steel Rat's site, but nothing for cargo ships.

Hmm, I think I may have just rolled a 1 on my forum etiquette check. Should I have put this in the modern art request thread?

RPGMapShare has a number of cargo containers (and, I believe, cranes) that should be useful in mapping out such ships.

Hi TreeHouse916,
Top down photos seem rare (to me anyway), but try -
Google Maps
- look at various docks from satellite - Rotterdam, London, Southampton, Singapore, Victoria. At the scale of the big vessels, the lack of resolution may be irrelevant to you! Alt+PrntScrn; paste in Paint.net; crop and rotate (don't centre on the ship or you get the google watermark!)
If you know the name of a shipping line you can get their deckplans as well as internal photos of the decks for atmosphere. Here is a Mekong river cruise vessels plans (provided for all their fleet):
Mekong river passenger boats . ...and... here.
I know it's not as huge as the tankers you are after, but compared to them a little teeny pirate motor boat is just a dot.
Anyway some plans ... cargo and tanker.
[Sites selling actual ships have plans on them.]
[Shipbucket is good for side on fold-up vessels of all fleets and types, but not top-down.]
Hope this makes sense(?)

I found some really great mapping objects here for the creation of a cargo ship battle map, which I'm planning to make anyway. If I do, I'll post my results over in the Maps forum.
ProBono - thanks for the suggestions! Google Maps is a great idea. I can't believe I didn't think of it, since I use Google Maps images for props in this game anyway.

One thing I've found to be an invaluable resource for modern vehicles is Google Sketchup. There's a pretty large library of free models. Recently I found a model of the tanker from Call of Duty 4. Just orient the model so you have a top down view and take a screenshot. Some models, like some of the aircraft I found, even have interiors done. Just cutaway the top and take a screenshot.
