Hi,
To save double work, please note that many of the FilterForge tiles linked to above by DragonWolf have
already been made up into Dundjinni tilesets. Please search Sci-Fi forum for "floor", or "hatch".
Here is a sample of some of those tiles in use on the Modular StarCruiser...
Below are some entirely random bucket-fills of existing DJ sci-fi tilesets into a few of the new Dungeon Tiles.
Which took all of 2 minutes. No thought went into these, they are just to let you see the textures.
Sample only - do not download.

Hmmm. Maybe I don't need to do this the hard way. Those look pretty
good. i'm worried about the walls though. They seem kind of plain. I'd like
to do something a little more evocative. And none of these particularly
scream "Alien Ship" to me. Maybe a new fill and some new walls are in
order? Maybe an alien outside fill as well. That'll be challenging,
something Geiger-esque? As I'm envisioning it, the walls of your nice new
star cruiser may be pretty sleek, like in Star Trek, or some of the corridors
of the Rebel Runner or Death Star. Then you've got ships whose walls are
little cluttered, but not bad. Then you've got your Alien, Millenium Falcon,
Firefly ships that have all sorts of dangerous crap sticking out at all angles
from the walls. Then you've got those weird Alien organic looking things,
which pretty much all derive from H.R.Geiger.
I've only just reinstalled basic Dundjinni. Are the sci-fi walls floors and
such collected anywhere other than an art pack?

I think this one is my favorite.

Glad they are of interest. The sample below has a more Daleky background and so on. It's really a case of
finding a basic wall, basic floor, basic background, that people will like and want to modify.
For an alien ship, more curves, wild angle, possibly
green lava on the outside, crystals for walls...(anything goes!)
"Copyrights" - when doing the recent Dungeon Tiles, both Bogie and Dorpond corresponded with CgTextures on
the License, and that site was very positive. I assume FilterForge would be equally positive as Kepli has an
art-pack using FF, and Totte has mountains of FF filters in use. Make it first, check license a little later on,
otherwise it may not get done.
Hi Mercutio,
Same choice as mine to be honest. So with a sample alternative "outside" for colour we get...
Here is the rest of Page 1 converted.
Sample only - do not download.
Other thoughts - is 6x6 best? (hey, I like it but I'm biased). Hexagons rather than squares? (but hex shaped tiles might not snap to grid on VTT, etc).

I was wondering about 6x6 for SF tiles since the assumption is "spaceship" much of the time. Does it make more sense to do 2x2 or 3x3 since it's more cramped
in space, theoretically anyway?

Hi Mercutio,
Just some thoughts... Spaceship or ground base or both with the same set?
...2x2 May be a bit small, as you're almost as quick using DJ straight.
...3x3 may not leave enough space for walls and things.
...Three and a half square, oddly enough (see Landing Base here) was really good in that the extra half square lets you put in art, shadows, etc. Drawback is the doors are in the middle of a cell, and LOS rules might need rewritten.
...BattleStations Tiles . BattleStation uses 5x5 (20mm squares with it's 15mm figures); one door space in the middle of each side.
...Pigs In Space modules used 6 (plus a half extra each side for the walls) by 10 long. Fits in A4 printer without wasting photo paper, but is limited in how you put such big tile together.
6x6 - small enough to do a couple extras in a spare hour the night before a game. I said I was biased.
I agree that 5' squares are bizzare - four guys can stand shoulder to shoulder in that... It's only sensible if you assume everyone is in a full NASA EVA spacesuit. A one yard (lets call it 1m as it's the future) seems more believable, for one body per square. It doesn't change anything in art except you get to make the objects a bit bigger. I remember Uncle-Servo did an fine example like that and it showed more of the detail of Diggers computers, etc, better.
That probably doesn't help any with the discussion. And apologies to GroovyDave if I've wandered the thread off track.
Anyway, considering a experimental little moon-pod-base tile set, but oddly enough might to 6x12, because of one of the rooms Maxxx did in that size...

My thoughts. While 5' squares may not be completely sensible, it is
kind of the going scale so why swim against the tide? Just makes the
product harder for the majority to use. IIRC Traveller used 1m squares.
Anyway, the key thing to consider is that you need enough squares to
have a centered corridor with space on either side. I agree that in
general starships are usually more cramped than dungeons or castles
(wierd that) though some of the corridors on the Death Star were
spacious. I think a 5x5 tile with 5' squares would be about right. You
could even do some tiles with two side by side corridors. I grabbed a
bunch of free floors and I really think thats pretty well covered. I'm
going to work on some walls with sci fi clutter on them. Then the real
challenge: Alien-esque walls and floors!

Hi GroovyDave,
"5' squares. Why swim against the tide?" Vgood point.
---
"5x5" - the BattleStations tiles may give a hint towards what you can fit it that size tiles. By simply
leaving off the wall on one side you can have double sized rooms, etc. A while back I did do DJ
versions of BS tiles, but of course can't post for copyright reasons.
---
"Alien tiles" - There are sets of Giger filters on FilterForge that might be of interest to FF savvy folks
(I don't know how FF works)...
...Giger on FilterForge HERE...
---
Hi DragonWolf,
Well.... Space Spartans may be happy with some grubby Vogon or Serenity class vessels, but some galaxy
trekkers do prefer sleek bright shiny craft. Space may be big enough for both types I suppose, and no-one
argues with Space Spartans anyway...
---
Look forward to the results!
