So, this thread has a dual-topic.
Video games we love to play- either for the gameplay, story and/or the graphics.
The application of textures extracted from the game or from screenshots for map usage.
My game addiction at the moment is Skyrim. Sure, there are several bugs, both graphically and gameplay wise, but I'm having such a blast playing that I don't care.
When it comes to visual, my favorite locations are
Blackreach and Shimmermist Cave- and of course, the sky.
The textures aren't as high a resolution as I would like, but that's easily tweaked in one's 3D settings.
DragonAge I and II are great as well, though I haven't played those in awhile.
I find myself taking screenshots rather often, to use as props, textures, and inspirations. I'm not the only one taking these kind of screens, right?

I used to take all kinds of texture screencaps for games as
diverse as City of Heroes and Requiem.
I was planning on playing a supers game, didn't have the
modern textures pack for Dundjinni, and I used my City of
Heroes character's flying ability to grab top-down
screencaps of street layouts. It was awesome.
For Requiem, I tried to use the ground textures to make
seamless tiles, but wasn't terribly successful.
I did use other games to do similar things.

I wouldn't have thought of that, good idea!
I plan on getting my hands on Skyrim for the PC soon, and I'm going to use and abuse the textures within, ohhh I can't wait!

I used to use Neverwinter Nights to create maps and export them. Especially for caves and such. I did it as axonometrics so my players could get the idea of the cave walls and pits.
I also used an outdoor Unreal Tournament a few times, and printed it out from an overhead view on a plotter.

That's a really good idea! I never thought of using their map feature... and I think I have that game lying around somewhere...
Also, I got Skyrim for the PC in the mail today! <3

Neverwinter Nights worked pretty well, and my wife played with us. I used it primarily for her to see what was going on, and what the monsters looked like. I used it on a big screen TV so all the players could see.
I used the editor to outfit their characters too, adding effects, items, etc.
Good times. Now I just us maptools, which isn't 3D, but still helps immensely and allows macros for die rolls, etc.

You can do screen caps and use the monsters in Neverwinter Nights as token graphics.

Heres a some videos of a guy who is using the Unreal Tournament game engine to develope his own Battlemap program.
Digital BattleMap 1
Digital BattleMap 2
Digital BattleMap 3
Digital Battlemap 4
Digital Battlemap 5
Digital Battlemap 6
Digital Battlemap 7
I tried to figure out how to get it to work but I am no good at writing and understanding code.
If it was available in a stand alone executable battlemap program i'd be all for it
