Hello all:)

This summer I will be running my first D&D 4E one-shot campaign and I thought I would make it something special by
creating a detailed colorful dungeon/cave map for the adventure.

I have been reading this forum and looking at how some of you guys are creating things. I have even downloaded a
lot of the art provided via these forums to integrate with my creations.

Anyway, what I am going for is like a lava cave/catacomb look for the first part of the adventure and would love to
get yall's feedback on what I have so far:)

Question though, how can I export my map so that you can view it full size with the actual 1" squares? when I pull
it up in Photoshop it is not the full size.

Welcome to the forums ynygma!    I deleted your duplicate post for you.

There are 3 export options. The jpg and png options give just a low res version of your map. To export high res select the bitmap export option and you can choose from 10 dpi up to the full size 200 dpi If your computer is a bit older, the 200 dpi can take a long time to render. You can speed it up by increasing the ram allotted to DJ. I believe that is in the Options menu at the top of the page.
Or you can temporarily turn off memory hogs like Anti spyware and anti virus programs, or you can see how it looks at a lower res setting such as 100 or 120 dpi.

The output will be a large file (about 85 MB at 100 DPI and about 150 MB at 200 DPI ). After you open that in Photoshop you can save it as a Jpeg to get it more reasonable.

For Posting here at the Forums, you can only post jpgs and pngs up to 500 KB or ZIP files up to 2 MB, so I usually do both. I'll post the lowres version so members can see what I've posted and then a 2 MB version ZIPed so they can get the better view. If I want a really large file, then I post the high-res version at rpgMapshare.com or at DeviantArt and link to it from here.

The map is coming along good. IN the options menu you can change the color and intensity of the grid and you can change what layers is shows on, I normally like it better when the grid only shows on the floor.

Have fun.

also if youre using a vtt, erase one square; somewhere that
wont be "in play" so you can set your grid within the vtt
to it. then put the grid on floor only, just looks so much
better.
on second look, we're seeing mostly floor, I think you
should be able to put the floor tile in the wall if you
wanted it to match and have a discernible difference. in
which case you would then have to close up the top end and
then bucket. For a first map, I'd say its pretty good; try
to go through the jailbrake tutorial, many great tips in
there.

Thank you for the advice, I will definitely check out
that jailbreak tutorial:)

Question though, and please forgive my ignorance, what is
a "vtt"?

Thank you,

VTT = Virtual Tabletop. It allows you to play RPGs over the
internet. You can see one of the most popular ones here or watch a video that
I just googled quickly.

Ahh OK.

No, our group is on the traditional side. Some of us use iPad for our character sheets but for the map we use a
big table with a large grid map and miniatures.

Speaking of that, what is yall's suggestion or method of
using a "fog of war" effect? My preliminary thought is
when I get the full size printed at Kinko's, I was going
to cut/slice the map into sections so I can reveal the
map as they progress through the adventure.

Thank you,

I went through the Jailbreak tutorial and definitely
learned some nice tips but I am still confused when you
say "put the floor tile in the wall if you wanted it to
match and have a discernible difference." The walls I am
using are the cave walls that Bogie created, the red
cooled lava like floor is not actually floor, I am using
a "cover" piece, over and over again to create a floor
like effect.

The cave walls are the biggest pain for me as I am just
using the 6 pieces that Bogie created and just rotating
them, erasing parts of them to attempt to get a cave wall
type effect...

Maybe I am making this more difficult than it has to be?

Yeah, those cave walls are more natural looking than just a Wall Texture, but they are a pain in the butt to work with.

Hey Bogie,

Your cave walls you made. Do you put them in the cover
folder or wall? I tried to put them in wall put they don't
work right in there.

For your question about FOW (fog of war) for traditional paper maps, I like to use cardstock that I cut into shapes of the rooms. The weight of the cardstock keeps it from blowing away during play and I can easily cut it into the shapes i want with an exacto blade.
