Hi Steve!

Thanx a million! Unfortunately I didn't use other characters than US ASCII, as the name was appointed to me in the cover. (Name: "Retail Copy".)

And with my good patience, I contacted a clever (and nerdy) friend of mine, who works as a Java programmer. Still no solution!

Finally my patience died away, and I returned it to my retailer, with sadness in my heart, since I really only wanted it to work! :(

Sune, it appears you have an older "Gold" version 1.0. If so, you will need to register with the name given you at the time of your original download/purchase. HOWEVER, version 1.0 had a bug in that the registration code system did not correctly recognize characters outside of the US ASCII character set. So if your name contains one of these characters, that could be the original reason for the trouble. (this problem was fixed in subsequent versions). Regardless, I would suggest contacting Fluid to get the latest version and a valid registration key to replace your original 1.0 version.

I've been unable to get dundjinni to work with my new computer. No other program is giving me trouble.

I've tried everything listed in this thread with no luck. I've clean installed various versions of java and dundjinni with no change.

I always get this error message.

An error occurred during startup.
You may have an improper installation, or invalid or missing map resources.
The program will be terminated
-------

No error codes that I can see.

Any help would be appreciated,

Strange. It happened to me after using the RETAIL version 4 to 5 times... Then, BOOM! Same error message... Didn'T change ANYTHING in the computer (drivers or JAVA) BUT I added art...

I think this error message happens when you fiddle with the arts...

that's just my 2cents...

I keep getting the "improper installation" message every time I run Dundjinni, unless I run it from a new install. I have found a couple of "fixes" that works for me; they may work for you as well.

Installing the latest update will fix this issue. No need to uninstall anything or reinstall the entire application. There are two problems with this fix:
  1. It takes a lot of time, and
  2. The INSTALL.LOG will grow to humongous sizes fast.
If that fix works, this probably will too, and will save you a lot of time in the long run: Make a backup copy of the entire Dundjinni directory immidiately after installing -- the program, updates, art packs, the works. Do not run Dundjinni before copying; do not fiddle with the backup. The next time Dundjinni throws an "improper installation" at you, copy the backed up files back to their original location.

Some notes:
  • In my backup, I've left out the PNG files. I've yet to have a problem with a PNG file.
  • Whenever I "fix" my installation in this way, I've found I can replace the *.txt files only, and Dundjinni will work afterwards. I haven't dug deep enough to see if a specific text file is causing the problem -- yet.
I hope this helps users encountering the issue as well as the developers...

Aargh! And me now. I've had no problems ever, after running the program dozens of times. The last art I installed was Baseline 3 from CSUAC. Now, it runs after one re-install...

Will investigate further.

Ive been getting the same error now. Ive uninstalled, deleted ALL registry references, removed the folder, deleted Java 1.5, rolled back to Java 1.4.2 - reinstalled to 1.04 (tried all 3 of my drives) and always get the same error message.

Its only since about 2 weeks ago or so that this has been happening. I havent any custom art work installed so it can't be that. It almost as if internally the version (which was platinum) has now decided its 'dead'

Problem still exists -- wish I had visited here before I downloaded the
thing.

OSX 10.3.9, Java 1.42, all other javas removed. Nothing doing.

Zicon: What version did you have before downloading the updates? I've
already got v. 1.04, so I'm uncertain the update would do anything.

Westuden: Error code 4 indicates that there is a problem
with the registration key matching the registered user name. Are you

registration form?

Turns out this was the problem. As others have noted, the name should
have been "Retail Copy".

A friend got the program at GenCon SoCal, and noticed that the Windows
installer will complain if the name isn't right. The Mac installer, however,
will let you enter a license and name that don't match, leaving the
program to catch the error on start.

It would be nice if the Mac installer checked too.

I've just bought the program (download version) after sucessfully using the demo. I've got the 'improper installation' message and no apparent error codes. Coming to this forum and reading the posts I've removed Java5, installed 1.4.2 , removed and reinstalled Dundjinni (rebooting as necessary throughout) and I'm still getting the improper installation error. Obviously I'm less than thrilled    Asuming that I've followed the instructions correctly what's the next step?
