Cisticola posted this image in another thread and I wanted to try doing something with it:
I made 20 overlay pieces from it, and modded a few ground textures to match. Here's a quick example with just the overlays and one of the ground textures:
And dressed up a bit with a few trees and a grid:
Is this something you'd like to use? I wanted to see what you guys thought first (I haven't packed it up into a zip set yet).

That looks superb! Only comments I might have are making the shadows on the overlay borders a lil darker and mmore refined to help darken and highlight where the hills end and ground terrain begins. Perhaps a faded stroke outline and/or shadow around the edges? Could help to give the map depth as well as if looking down upon it. Otherwise fantastic for chop-shopping a difficult image!

Ean, I think I know what you mean about the edges, but I'm not sure how to do that (or if it's even possible) with these pieces. I did an inside/outside feather on all of them so they could blend with each other. Here's an example:

Ooooo...that looks great!
It is possible to darken the edges, but then you would lose the ability to blend them into each other, they would only then work as standalone pieces.
I tend to work with flat pieces anyway as I create depth post work.

I'll leave them as is then. The whole point was to be able to blend them together, and I don't want to loose that.
BTW, is the original photo yours Cisticola? Wondering who I'll need to credit when I pack this up.

Okay, props to you!
I rendered up a watch tower and covered it in snow. Will include it in the pack as well, along with the slightly modded versions of Kepli's snow trees.
It's all very...monochromatic. But I like it.

ALRIGHT, ALREADY!!! STOP with the Dang SNOW!!!! I haven't had a chance to enjoy Fall yet, Don't rush Winter! I live in Maine, this is what my back yard will look like soon enough!

LOL!! I remember Maine winters vividly. They're brutal and last for ages...and then spring finally rolls around and the black flies come out. Oh joy.  Don't know how we survived 4 years there. Had about 8 inches of solid ice on our driveway one year and the UPS truck got stuck. My hubby and the driver had to slide the truck around on the ice to point him back down the hill.
