Hi Rotten,
Just a couple more possibilities...
Before cutting and pasting two figures together, consider using the Magic Wand tool to select the existing shadows, and Delete them. Then you can hack up the pictures with no worries about the dreaded cropped shadows. Once happy with the new beastie, there will be a Drop Shadow option somewhere.
---
Another idea is to make a separate shadow entirely. Then it can go where you want it.
In Paint.Net (Adobe has the same things but different names) - made the figure Black&White; use Brightness/Contrast to make it pitch black; Unfocus (blur) one or two points to take off the edge; make the Layer Property Opacity (range 0 to 255) at say 180. Voila - a see through shadow. Now you can stick it anywhere under the beastie. Make it smaller to imply flying high.
Then you can do odd things by positioning the shadow underneath...
Look forward to more.

Quickie... Did not do a drop shadow on this guy because of the nature of their shadows!

Hmmm... Was re-reading this and wondered what he was on about, so looked it up ...Peryton on Wiki... ..."Often depicted as a winged deer, the peryton is said to have the head, neck, forelegs and antlers of a stag, combined with the plumage, wings and hindquarters of a large bird, although some interpretations portray the peryton as a deer in all but coloration and bird's wings. Borges wrote that the beast's shadow, instead of being that of a winged deer, appeared to be the shadow of a man..."
So... for completeness... using a Digger Zombie to make a shadow from...
The Wiki also says that "in a Donald Duck comic, Mythological Menagerie, Donald Duck uses cardboard wings to disguise a normal deer as a peryton to trick Huey, Dewey, and Louie," but am unsure if that is needed...(?)

Terrific looking beastie! And great job on the version with the human shadow!
I also hadn't heard of a Peryton before.

Okay, cool statue. Could we have a darker one? Pretty please.
Love the shadow pngs.
Never heard of the man shadow bit. Have heard about Peryton before since I saw it long ago in 1st/2nd ed. ADND. :) Wasn't there a Greek myth about them? I may be misrembering.
