Howdy Dundjinneers

Here is another upload that I hope will be useful to some people. I'm not sure if anyone has created something like this but here is a Hill Overlay transparency that can be placed over a patch of grass to make it look like a hill. Resize to your specifications. I haven't actually tested this in the program (laptop at home) so if anyone could try it out and give me feedback I would appreciate it. If this works out I can try some more hill overlays with different shapes.

I like this and would like to see more. I'll give it a try when I get home, but it looks like it should work.

Thanks!

Cool. I'll try to come up with more when time allows and upload later.

Note: I created this while using a dark patch of grass as a guide. It may need to be lightened (opacity lowered) for use with lighter shades of grass.

I've played with these overlays a little. They look great, and I'm sure I'll get a lot of use out of them. Where is hill overlay 1?

Hill overlay 1 was a bigger version of overlay 2. When I post another hill overlay I will name it #1 to complete the numbering order. Sorry.

On a side note I finally was able to try out the overlay on dundjinni and have some self criticism. I'm not sure about the white highlights I painted on the overlay. They stand out a little too much. I might redo to make a little more subtle.

1. I create a shape in Illustrator and copy it into Photoshop onto its own layer with transparent background(you can also create the shapes in Photoshop.)
2. Create a layer mask from the shape.
3. Paint black (10% transparency on brush) in the layer to find edges of shape.
4. Gaussian Blur the mask to blur out the edges.
5. Paint black within the layer to show low points and erase to make highpoints.
6. Take the layer transparency down to 85%
7. Save out as a PNG

I got rid of the white splotches and updated the files. Hopefully this will look better with the grass tiles.

I've tried them and like the way they work. I zoomed a couple up 200% because I thought some of them were too small. But they still look fine with the zooming. Thanks.

I actually designed them to be larger but I was obeying the under 500k rule for posting. Fortunately the nature of the files allows them to be zoomed as large as they can go in Dundjinni without losing too much quality.

Once I actually get Dundjinni for the Mac I will probably post more of these overlays because I will be making lots of these customized elevations for my gaming maps. Until then maybe I can take some requests for some nice generic hill shapes.

dblade,
If you send me the original files I'll include them in the weekly downloads. That way they can go "out the door" at their original size.

Hey Cecil,

When do you plan to compile the weekly downloads? The original files are at my work so I will have to wait until Monday evening (Chicago time) to send them to you.

How about a spiral shape? Or an "S"? OK - I know it's not generic but I think they'd make great entrances to a barrow downs-like dungeon. Nice work! I knew if I visited this board I'd get inspired. Sure enough - I now have several map ideas bouncing around in my head.

Don't forget: You can post zipped files of 1 meg in size, so zip the bigger hill overlays and post them that way!

These are really, really good!

Excellent. I will repost everything Monday or Tuesday night as zipped
files. They are about twice the size of the PNGs I posted here. This
will give everyone better resizing options in Dundjinni.

Cecil: Should I still send the larger hill overlays to you directly or do
you want to just download the zipped files I will post?

I can just download the zipped files. Keep in mind that PNG files are already compressed, so you won't save any space by zipping--you're just changing the amount of space allocated to them on the forums.

If any go over 1 MB, send them my way.

I compile the downloads every week, so if I miss any due to a deadline, they can always make it in the next week.

These really worked great for some maps I am making for Axis & Allies Mini game, they stack well for layers also.

If anyone could knock out 3-10 more hill shapes that would help alot.

Thank you all for the help, ideas and fun!

I'd love to see more (hinthintDBLADEhint), but in the meantime you can search for:
Hill
Falaise
Cliff
Stair
Shadow
Shading
Depression
Overlay
and find some more things kind of like this. They may not all be what you're looking for, but I hope you find some things that work for you.

Can someone post a zip of these in PNG format please?   When I right click on them all I can save them as is BMP format which loses the whole effect and just ends up black.

(unless there's some setting on my IE7 which is stopping me downloading these directly as PNG files which someone knows about?)

Thanks all

I had the same problem and so does a lot of other users one this forum. There is some threads on the subject.
I followed every recomendation here and on the microsoft support. Nothing worked. And I could not get Internet Explorer to work. I then downloaded the Firefox browser (it's free) and it worked just fine. You should download Firefox.

Cheers for the reply.

Sadly this is a work PC and I can't just go downloading other browsers willy nilly...

I'll search for some things to try.

Cheers

Still after a zip of these anyone please?

P.S. I've just tried downloading it and saving it as Hill.png" but when I come to open it in PSP it says its not a valid PNG file. So that's not a work around I can use.

Hey, does anyone know how DBlade made these overlays? I would love to make a bunch of them for the community. I think they are great for use during that quick outdoor encounter. That bit of 3d can really make a difference tactically.

I tried using Photoshop but was stumped on where to even begin. I tried Gradients but those gradient from color A to color B, not color A to Transparent. (unless I just don't know how)

Were they drawn out by hand? They look to perfect for that.

*stumped*

I have seen an explanation on how he did these or something similar once ... but best let him handle the explanation

A gradient can easily be from black to transparent. I use that in PS all the time for my shading. Just select the gradient tool and at the top you can select another gradient style.

how he made his overlays. Try searching for it.

I create them by hand but I use the layer mask to maintain the blended shape at the edges. When I have time I will try to create a true tutorial.

In the meanwhile my rough step-by-step method is actually detailed in this thread.
