I have a bunch of source images like this one, but I'm not sure if it really works. This is a small pine tree, maybe 3-4 feet tall. What do you guys think? Does it work on the map? How big should I make it?

I think the level of detail in impressive. Your drop shadows look just right. I vote for seeing more.

It looks great! As for size, vary them. After all.. trees aren't all the same size right? However pines ranging in size from 4'tall (like the one you posted) to 30' tall should cover most peoples needs. Of course scaling them say at every 5' height intervals (with respective width) would make a great collection.

For scaling I'm more concerned that if I blow it up too much, at some point the individual needles turn out to be two feet long and look more silly than realistic. Certainly I'd like as big as possible...

i like it alot. a little bigger would be nice tough since scaling down is always easy but blowing it up just looks ugly.

Okay, here's what I've got. Sizes vary. Scaled to 30% of the originals, which gives trees as big as 12 and a half scale feet across. That seems as big as was going to look okay.

Whoa! I just realized what the actual size of these babies are, and how wonderfully freaky they'll look when made bigger. They're perfect for my next adventure! I'll have to recolour them to some odd colours, though. Should I upload the recoloured versions when I'm done with them?

Now I'm just curious what you're doing...

Updated the last one to match the scale of the others:
