An interesting approach to using this map in actual play may be to set it up such that the players only get to look at it for a moment at a time, during their turn. That way, they don't have a lot of time to trace their way through the map. Then, have something really, really menacing chase them through the maze, so that they're perhaps more compelled to escape the maze than fight the monster.

This is just the basic shape. I'm filling it with traps and other hazards. I haven't decided what the denizens will be, but just for tradition's sake, a minotaur (of some sort) will have to play a role.
It would be a different experience whether the PCs are dropped into the middle and have to escape, or have to get into the middle to find something (or someone.)

I like this very much and plan to do something similar soon.
I read an adventure in Dungeon (I think) where there was a picture of a maze on a door. On the maze you could see a living monitor and other moving creatures. If anyone touch the maze, everyone within 5 feet of the door were transported to the beginning of the maze. The only way to get out of the maze, and to open the door, was to get to the central room.
My evil plans are to create the maze and show the map to the players to look at. They should be intrigued by the living/moving creatures. Once they indicate that they touch the picture, I will yank it away and the fun begins. Hopefully this works out next weekend.
