Depth of field
This is a relatively advanced technique to make your map appear high above the treetops, looking down a multi level building, or traversing a cave of lava.
A Cave of lava
A second story of a temple
Heres the tutorial

How to create transparent backgrounds using The GIMP
Taken from the I'd create .png files myself but... thread:
For those with GIMP or without an art program.
First, google The GIMP--it's a free art program, very nice and high quality. Don't forget to get it AND it's enviroment. Version 2.2.4 works for me. (Also, make sure you found GIMP for Windows, or whatever your OS is, and not vice versa.)
OK, now that you have GIMP, open it up and bring in the object that you want to PING-ize, otherwise this tutorial's going to look likegobbledegook. Go to Layer in the menu bar on top, then choose Transparency and Add Alpha Channel. Now, use the "Magic Wand"/Select Continuous Regions tool (top row, third from right on the tools select thingy, main program) to select all the white, or whatever color stuff you want to get rid of. Click Edit on the top toolbar, then select Cut to get rid of the selected area. Fiddle with it to your liking. Then, when you're happy with it, click Save As, then Select File Type (by Extension) and choose PING, then OK, you're DONE! That's it! (I'd add pictures but I'm way too lazy--it'll make more sense when you have GIMP up in front of you. Trust me.)
