Hey all, I just got the program yesterday, and I'm having a lot of fun downloading content and creating a little of my own.
Here's my very first map (after one false start and the tutorial). It's a little cluttered and simplistic in some ways, but it does look like the center of my character's gnome village to me.
Sticks is a wizard (and actually a quasi-deity now--with both a tree and tree on fire as holy symbols). His home is the burrow in the middle, and there's a forge nearby. To the northwest are some guest chambers, and to the northeast are tents for drow refugees (don't ask). Sticks is a half fire elemental, so you'll notice a fire theme (and his followers are similar). Likewise the tree theme. Sticks lives upstairs in the tree at the back of the burrow, and the room on the left is a planning room for the party. You also see some portals and scrying mirrors. The town is Glimmerburrow (and you can see the namesake formation in the southeast corner).
In any case, tell me how to make stuff better if you have a moment. Thanks!
EDIT: Look down two posts.

Yup! and dont forget raised walls as well! Welcome aboard and very nice first map Uncdevil! Looks like you found the User Art Archive as well!
Tip: Might want to rotate the trees a little more while you are "planting" them.

Yeah, I was pretty lazy about the trees. I meant to make a pass afterwards and resize and twirl, but I just couldn't make myself once my computer started running really slowly.
And I have some shadows on. Are there others that I don't know about?

Gotta a big Oak tucked under your hedge in the top right and the stump near the steamroom. BTW, nice work with the steam effect!
BluDragn has a nice trick to make a better transition from grass to river. Either he or Kepli can point that out for you. Kepli will be waking up soon. :)
Its been awhile since I have been the first on the welcoming committee.
If you need help, just ask. This is the friendliest place on the web! Keep up the great work!!!

Some nice work. I like that you used different grass in different areas. (And yes, Blu has some fantastic 'transitions' available to make it better.)
You can rotate the trees when you are placing them so you don't have to go back afterwards.
I like the irregularly shaped burrow in the center. Although I might have used an earth-tone wall to represent it being in the ground.
The tents are too perfectly aligned. Yeah, I know it's for drow, but it just looks too unnatural. Same for the bedrooms. I like the variety you put in them but they are too identical in terms of spacing and furniture.
You've really come out swinging on this first map. Nice going.

I know I could have rotated the trees then, but I was just clicking and clicking and clicking and didn't want to slow down.
As for the orderliness...well, that's story related. My character is finicky and sort of OCD. I'm not far off myself.
And the tents in particular were meant to seem military. Back when I was a boy scout, that was the look we always tried for up there.
But the wall tuckunders are errors that I'll fix at some point. Now I just need to figure out what else to map since I'm not in control of the campaign these days. Wonder what my dm needs...

Excellent work!
For future postings, you might want to consider editing your original post instead of creating a new one, if you have an updated image (especially the larger ones, like maps). It makes the page load a bit faster if we don't all have to download effectively the same large image twice.
