Friendly reminder:

If you have the ability to create PDFs you can make your posted maps more print-friendly by uploading PDF versions in addition to the JPG versions.

One of the easiest ways to create a pdf (and free) is PDFCreator http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=57796& package_id=89008

There's also CutePDF & PrimoPDF.

Would be glad to hear if anyone has good reasons for using one rather than another.

Cute & Creator use Ghostscript which might suit GIMPers.

I've used Cute PDF before but it broke my printer driver. Personally I've been using Open Office to generate the PDFs. It allows you to integrate text with your images and resize as desired.

PDFCreator gives you more options for output, allowing you to print to png, jpeg, and so on. As for the resulting output, cute and pdfcreator are on par (and essentially use the same system - ghostscript). PDFcreator gives you a little more control on the output resolution and such.

The pdfs created by openoffice, while certainly functional, are not as efficient as pdfcreator, which is not as effecient as Adobe. However, for the price and the flexibility I end up using both Adobe and pdfcreator.

just a note. We Mac OS X users can do this without additional software. It's
built in to the OS through the print dialogue.

Question:

How can we upload pdf's of our maps? The minimum size of my typical map is over 3-4 MB. Can you guys raise the file size limit to help us with this request?

Hi guys, I'm looking into the possibility of raising the filesize limit. No promises but will see what I can do.

Any luck on this yet????

I'd still be happy to upload pdf's if we can get the cap raised to accomodate pdf sizes which are typically 2-3mb.

Ben

Ben, I'm thinking of having a "Download Map as PDF" function in the new
website, if we can swing it. Additionally, the ability to download multiple
images as a zipfile that the webserver creates for you. I had not thought
about upload functionality for PDFs (only download), but will give it some
thought.
