I love the idea of making transparent shadows to create illusions plus there is no need for several different colors since they overlay your existing background.

My recent goal was to be able to take a ground image and stamp down shadows to create the illusion that the earth is broken up.

In this example, I created crater effects and when placed on an dirty or rocky background, it creates a place of desolation.

Here is a thumbnail of the images:

Here is where you can get them. They are uploaded at www.rpgmapshare.com and you can find them here: Crater_dpnd.zip?

Look at the examples below to get an idea:

Before Picture(created by Steel Rat)

And here is the result with my craters-like effects:

These can be placed on dungeon floors to produce aged effects or used to create a place of desolation when stamped on dirt or rocky earth. You will find that you can get multiple depths by stacking these images. I hope you enjoy them as much as I had making them! Have Fun!

Now, I need a map I could use in the Xen'drik jungles or a giants temple perhaps. Anyone have anything like that?

Yes, I be a man :)
And thanks for the compliment.

I can't wait to see you fine cartographers use these in action!

It is amazing what you can do with shadowy (both light and dark) effects.

If there is something I can do to modify them (like if they don't work well with certain backgrounds), let me know and I will try to modify them to your needs.

Thanks again everyone! Enjoy!

There's a lot of neat effects that can be done with this idea. This is just the
tip of the iceberg.

You might also consider using color-tinted (but still semi-transparent)
overlays.

Yeah, I agree Heruca. I was thinking about making the ones I posted slightly filled with water or swampy liquid.

I guess we could fill these with many transparent colored liquids. If anyone feels up to modifying mine, feel free!

Tried them on a tiled floor last night and even then they look good. Makes it seem something nasty happened on that spot
I'd like to see some samples by people who have used these and possible modifications

Well, I was playing around with filling the craters with color but I find that the illusion is a bit thrown off its axis. With the arrival of color, it appears that the eyes all too easily "unfocus" and turn the shadows around causing the water to appear above the crater. (which ends up looking like a blob of gunk)

This can happen to the original craters if you stare at them long enough and I knew that from the start but the addition of color makes it happen way too easy.

(try this at home: at a quick glance at the example, what do you see? Do you see the liquid lower that the ground? Whatever you see, keep staring at it and then you will see it change - it will be opposite from what you saw originally. With practice, you can make the liquid below or above the ground - I don''t like that)

I am not sure if I want my players to have their eyes buggin' at the gaming table and I am unsure how I can fix this. It is a known problem with working with shadowy illusions.

You tell me; do you like the examples below? Do you see what I mean after you look at it for a while?

You are right ... my first inclination is that the colours are ON the crater. It may help if the shadowside is at 145 degrees (right-bottom), because that is a DJ standard (just look at the Wall Shadows). I see a lot of lighter areas on that side, instead of the darker shadows.
Did that all make sense enough?

Yeah, I am going to play around with this more and see if changing the shadows makes a difference. Thanks for the advice Kepli..

In the past, I found that no matter what direction I make the shadows, I find that the eyes have an uncanny way of flipping them which makes total sense; there are works of art hanging in gallery's that take advantage of this "illusion" effect.

Putting color in there definately makes it easier for the eyes to latch on to something though and it makes it much easier for the liquid to be above everything - of course that is bad :)

When I am done experimenting with this, I will update you all.

Later!

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention why I didn't put the shadows on the 145; put down in this fashion makes things look tall (above ground level) because it is casting a shadow but when I put the shadow on the opposing side, it gave it depth as if the ridge of the "canyon" was in shadow..

Understand?

I will play around with it again. Maybe my eyes were "locked in" to the wrong perspective when I was experimenting :)

I guess I need to figure out where the light source is before I continue. Is the light source in Dunjinni in the NW posision?

Yep, but only for walls ... on everything else it's top-down. If you choose a perspective, NW is your best option imo.

Good luck

I think the problem may be that the shadows and highlights need to be
inside the colored area, not around it. The transparency should be less on
the outside and get more opaque towards the center of each "lake".

I need to give my eyes a rest. Everything I look at now looks correct.. That is the problem with these; it is like looking at those crazy pictures of patterns and colors wherein lies a hidden picture - the more you look at them the easier it is to see the hidden picture! Same here - my eyes a buggin'!

If any of you want to help out - please feel free! Should be simple to add another layer to them and drop down transparent shadows.

I was trying out your craters and they are really great but they gave me an idea when I tried them on some of my swamp waters. So I did a mod to one of them to make it green and added bumb texture to it. Here is a small result in swamp water and effects.

Hmmm.. I love the idea and we are seriously on to something; the only problem I am facing is that the illusion can work against us sometimes by making things look above instead of below the surface.

When I first looked at your example, it looked like there was a green grass spreading about which looks to me as being on top instead of below.. Was that what you were aiming for?

This bothers me like to no end and I am wondering how I can fix this to make the illusion translate better.. I found that the lighter the background, the more it appears above while darker backdrounds pull the crater downward.. *sigh*

Maybe I will start over and try different shadowing..

Love what you are doing though!

yes the texture is suppose to be on top of the water and blending with the water. This is an easy fix for the object. All you have to do is do a feather erase on all the outer edges to get a natural blend with the floor.
I will do this to the image and post again.

Hey, I have a question:
Could it be that shadows in any direction have the potential of causing this while putting a shadow around ALL the edges could make it appear "sunken"?

Maybe I am approaching this the wrong way all together.

Scientifically speaking, perspective can change depending on how your eyes see it so whether a shadow on the NW or on the SE, it can still be viewed as above or below. I don't see a way to escape that.

Any ideas out there from you graphic wizards?

One way of making sure is using a top-down shadow Dorpond. In the case of making something look lower, use an inner-shadow or inner-glow (PS terminology). A perspective shadow will often fool you on a 2D surface

PS question: When doing shadows, PS forces us to have an angle. How do we not have an angle and put the shadows top down only?

Take one of the large creations in the universe and use your wand to extract what you need

Simple really - use what is already created for us - find pictures of moons, plantets and craters; use your wand in PS to selects bits and pieces of them and manipulate them all in PS.

Simple huh?

The tricky part is the manipulation methods in PS and to be honest with you, once you get something you like, copy the layer style and paste it on the others to mass produce them

Feel free to make a new thread here with examples if you like!

Thanks! I can't wait to see them! Can't wait to see maps with them also!

Weird, the zip-file links Bludragn posted still work for me. I am using FireFox right now.

Hey, All.

For those of us who aren't using Fire Fox (myself included -- I use Windows Internet Explorer), the link posted on Post 1, Page 1 takes you to a "Page not found" on the Website.

I certainly would appreciate either a better direct link or the overlay zip files posted within the thread in order to make use of them.

For that matter, what's up with the RPGShare Website. The UI looks really barren and when I log in, I don't have ANY choices other than new and "look who's new"?

Thanks, in advance, and I do look forward to getting the overlays.

Regards,

Vandy

Both of those links go directly to RPGMapshare.com and it looks like Steel Rat has restricted access to his site due to problems with spammers. ( I deleted 6 spam posts from Dundjinni Forums this afternoon. ) Apparently his restrictions have broken the links to the art stored there.

Possibly someone else has the pieces on their hard drive and could repost them here?

I just checked several links that I have used for maps that I posted on RPGmapshare and all of them are broken as well. I re-registered using a unique email address (not Yahoo, Hotmail or Gmail) and was able to log into the site and there appears to be nothing there except some of the Blogs. I hope it only means that SteelRat is just repairing or updating his site.   A lot of good art and maps could be lost if the site truly crashed.

Steel Rat - Haven't heard that name for quiet a while - maybe we should have a "where are they now thread"

(not that I've been posting much of recent)

Unfortunately, the only ones I have are the green moss ones on page 5 and those still work.

I've looked everywhere on my storage drive for the zip of Crater Effects. Couldn't find it. Long ago I got zip files from someone (name escapes me) who had taken everything users had posted, well almost everything. I discovered I don't have the one we need. The zip file was called "DundjinniUsers0607pt2.zip" in case any of you saved those old files. I even searched my Dundjinni program files on my regular computer to see if I'd popped the art in my Cover folder. Nope. If you kept the old user art in that zip perhaps you can post it somewhere where we can get it???
