For those who don't yet know, I've been working on an artpack that will encompass all of the Gems, Jewels and Precious stones listed in the 3.5 DMG tables.

The artpack will include 3 different sizes of each stone:
Regular, Large, and Massive (approx. 5' X 5')

The regular size would be the average size included in treasure piles. (I'll be working on these soon as well )
The Large and Massive sizes could be used to decorate thrones, summoning circles, etc. or could be used for treasure as well.

While I was hunting the internet for reference pics, I realized that several of the stones did not look like I had imagined them to look.

Because of this, I will also be putting together a visual reference document that can be used by the DM to answer the inevitable player question: "What does Rhodochrosite look like?".

I would like to know how much interest there would be in this artpack and in the visual reference document.

Here is a teaser contact sheet of some of the Gems, Jewels and Precious stones in the artpack that I have been working on for you guys.

JPeg Sample:

Credit where credit is due: GreyTale made the original gems that these were based upon.
Thanks Buddy!

GTech

Awesome work GTech.
I am sure a lot of blood, sweat and tears went into that.

More! More! More! (Just had to turn the tables a bit there).

What a response!

It's settled.
This project goes to the top of the "To do" list.

I'm about halfway done (haven't shown all of the completed ones yet ).

I will be working on several of the Precious stones (Lapis Lazuli, Jasper, Malachite, etc.) tomorrow.

Any comments on the visual reference document that I had mentioned?

Which format would you guys prefer? (.doc, .jpg, etc.)

Just names and pictures, or would you also like a brief description of any interesting (real world) properties that it may have?

Examples of interesting real world properties:

Alexandrite: Alexandrite is a color-changing stone. When it is under natural sunlight or fluorescent light, the crystal will be a deep green. When under incandescent light, it will appear red.

Corundum: Corundum has many colors, all of which, except red, fall into the sapphire category. Ruby is the name of Red Corundum.

Star Rose Quartz, Star Ruby, and Star Sapphire: Star Gems will not show their "Star" quality if cut as a facetted stone. They will only show their "Star" quality if cut and polished as a Cabochon cut. A Cabochon cut is a flat-backed, convex, dome-like shape.

I think the most important part of the document is the connection between the name and an image. This gives the DM the ability to show the players what a gem, jewel, or precious stone looks like.

All of the stones in this artpack are color-matched to their real world counterparts, as well as being depicted in their most common (or most valuable) cuts.

It should also be noted that I am no expert in gemstones.
I've just learned a LOT while I was looking for reference pics.

Comments on the document anyone? Useful or not?

Thanks,
GTech

Damn BenWax!!

I almost fell out of my chair!

Update:

I only got the one comment, from Lurker, on the visual reference document, so I may just skip it due to lack of interest.
Hey, my ideas can't be winners *ALL* of the time.

I should have the first installment of the artpack up in the next few days.

Stay tuned,

Regarding posting the first installment of my Gems and Jewels tomorrow:

I have reconsidered.

Sorry guys, I'm going to wait until Halebop and Lurky's "post count war" is over.

I have been holding off for about 3 days now, looks like I'll continue to wait, like the rest of you.

I don't want them falling to the 4th page of the forums in the first day like some of the other Great New art pieces that have been posted recently.

Hint, Hint, guys.
GTech

P.S. You guys do realize that with Kepli's promotion to Webmaster, you guys are already #1 and #2, right?

LOL! It happens GTech--my very first map got bumped due to the first contest. Just post it and go back later and bump it. Halebop has like 3 months worth of postings to get caught up on so otherwise you will have to wait for a LONG while.

A lot of you have been waiting a Long time for the first installment of my Gems, Jewels and Precious Stones artpack.

Thank you all very much for your patience.

As the new map contest is for a Dragon's Lair, I didn't want it to be seen that I was holding out on anybody. ( @ GreyTale )

So now, You shall wait no longer!

As a reward for your patience, I give you the first 3 installments.

Including several that you've never seen before.

All of the zips below should be unzipped to DJ's "Map" folder.
Each of the zips contains an entire file structure, including a "Tokens" folder (with placeholder file to prevent errors), and a "Treasure" ~properties file for each bottom level folder.

If unzipped to the Map folder, the file structure will be as follows:

C:\Program Files\Fluid\Dundjinni\Map\Treasure\Gems\DiamondBlue (Treasure)\Diamond_Blue_Rd_Mass_GT_GT1.png

The Gems will be organized and ready for use in DJ immediately after the unzip.

On to the artpack installments:

Pack_01 and Pack_02 contain all of the gem types included in my teaser contact sheet in the first post of this thread.

All of them have multiple sizes (scaled for DJ) and several have multiple different shapes of the same gem type. (I.E. Diamond Cut, Oval Cut, Round cut, and Square cut)

Pack_03 is all new.

Gem types contained in Gems_Pack_01_GT1 and Gems_Pack_02_GT1:
JPEG:

Gems contained in Gems_Pack_03_GT1:
Irregular Pearls: JPEG

Pearls: JPEG

Star Gems: JPEG

And Finally ... Here are the Zips:
2EZ_Gems_Pack_01_GT1.zip
319_Gems_Pack_02_GT1.zip
11F_Gems_Pack_03_GT1.zip

I'm still working on the Precious Stones, they are far more difficult.
Unfortunately, they will take a while. (Sorry)

I will make the referrence document after the release of the entire pack.

Again, Thanks for waiting, and I hope I've made it worth your while.

GTech

Nice assorted layout with the gems Hale.

I think these would work rather nicely with the coin piles I did a while back.

I had considered doing a "Cover" set with all of these, but I believe there are like 57 different types.

Thanks,
GTech

Noobie Anti-Confusion Note : Hale's great assorted gems use the "Cover" item naming convention. This allows for quicker and easier placement, but don't put them in the Gems (treasure) folders. Make a new folder with a "Cover" ~properties file.

Good googly moogly!

I'm brand spankin new here, but good grief! These rock!

I've been there when a player asks what a jewel looks like and you are at a loss for words. Gtech, you have added quite a significant visual referance for the gaming world who uses DJ. I can't believe you went through and did these! They are beautiful! Only think I think I could critique is that the diamond shaped gems look a little wonky to me. Like, the top and bottom angles are just a bit too acute, but then again, I don't do too much jewelry shopping or researching! Out side of that, I can't wait for the rest of your collection to come out!

And I personally would love the referance document for the gems. That way, you not only have a visual referance, but good verbage to descripe them. Keep up the awesome work Gtech! :D

Ah Ha! Nice to see this thread pop back up!

Thanks very much for your compliments guys.

Most of my DJ time is now occupied with Tech support, Bug testing and working on DJ 2.0. so unfortunately, I don't have time to do the precious stones. Sorry.

I wish I could work more on these, and I'm very glad that you all like them.

Thanks,
GTech

Aww! Tis a shame!

I hope your testing and develpoment goes smoothly! I would hope, if there is still the same interest, you would pick up youor stones and continue on. I know many would be pleased.

Good luck and may the code bend to your will! :D

Whenever you can, could you make some uncut and tumbled stones too? Gads... If I had a way to take pics of some of my jewelery, I'd send them to put into treasure piles... I used to play in a couple of LARPs back in MA... years ago and have a bunch of costume stuff that would make some neat items.

Nidae,

Sorry, maybe I was a little ambiguous, I'm not the DJ programmer, I'm the DJ QA Team Leader (Head Bug Tester and over-all Quality Assurance dude)

Thanks for the Kudos,
GTech
P.S. If all goes well in the development, I may have time to finish the precious stones ... but not for a while.

Ahhh, okay! I get it now. Makes much more sense. Still, keep up your awesome work no matter what it's on.

(And I hope that you do get time in the near/distant future to complete this marvelous little project/idea. Would be a shame for someone who has spent so much time to leave it hanging in the midst. /hug )
