Here's a preview of something I worked on today. Unfortunately, I discovered too late a problem with the dropshadow on most of these, but it shouldn't show up in most cases.

JPEG Samples (don't download)

Zips:
48A_Rogue1_Brownshirt_chs_hrc.zip
56A_Rogue1a_Yellowshirt_chs_hrc.zip
C41_Rogue1b_Redshirt_chs_hrc.zip
F1F_Rogue1c_Purpleshirt_chs_hrc.zip
933_Rogue1d_Blueshirt_chs_hrc.zip
3AC_Rogue1e_Greenshirt_chs_hrc.zip
A4D_Rogue1f_Greyshirt_chs_hrc.zip
2DZ_Rogue1g_Whiteshirt_chs_hrc.zip

Thanks for the original art, Cecil.

And to all Poser gurus: please render more commoners! We really need more variety in this area. Merchants, barkeeps, serving girls, blacksmiths, peasants, etc.

Wonderful! Can't wait for the zips! I have need of these a lot as my gamers go around the city.

Thanks!

It would be great to get this thread cooking like some of the others.

You can never have enough commoners walking around on a map. :)

Great idea Heruca and good stuff!

OK, the zips are posted in the OP.

SR, those look like good candidates for keplification and/or modding.

This guy could be a barkeep, or a local bully, or perhaps a smithy.

GREAT work Heruca!!

The commoners in the first post would make for an Excellent arena audience!!
That is ... if we could talk someone into doing a sitting pose.

Thanks Very much,
GTech

I am going to approach this a bit differently. I call this the Mr. Potato Head Technique:

The eye quickly notices repetition and if we had a way of breaking that repetition, then we will quickly fool the eye.

Making a stock bodies and having different heads is the key. This way we can plop down a head and make it look in all different directions. It would be great if we could have some limbs too!

Here is an example of 4 commoners with just their head facing differently.

Now all we need is great artists to pull it off!

Edit:
A little better body:

It'd be fun to make a little app for creating top-down tokens by mixing and
matching bodies, heads, limbs, weapons, shields, etc.

Like HeroMachine, but for top-down stuff.

Poser for Photoshop!

I like the idea Dorpond.

Heruca: I'll be watching for those sitting poses.
I've been waiting to do my Gladiatorial arena until I could find a "suitable" and "sitable" audience.

Thanks Guys,
GTech

Hey Heruca, how do you make those nice contact sheets? I like how they show each picture with a shadow. Just curious.

Dorpond,

My contact sheets are just a screen capture of a Finder window in MacOS X. I
customized the view to show the largest icons possible and gave the window
a grey background and the smallest possible font size. The drop shadows
are automatically added by the operating system.

35 more tokens. These would make good tavern patrons or event spectators. They're based on the same Poser model as the standing rogue, so electronic gamers can have the same person in multiple postures.

Thanks again for the original artwork, Steel Rat.

This one is kinda sci-fi, but I didn't feel like starting a separate thread, and it might work for fantasy anyway.

Good mods Heruca!

FYI, the clothing is supposed to be fantasy, leather hauberk or something and then whatever the clothing is supposed to be. But hey, some sci-fi settings are reminiscent of medieval fantasy.

Nice!

They look fine to me. They look "non-descript" which is exactly what I'm looking for!

I think they would fit both Fantasy and Modern/SciFi.

Thanks Buddy,
GTech

P.S. Anyone else planning to pick up the torch and run with this?
I don't have the programs or 3D ability.

Heruca is getting these from my site and modding them, there are more he hasn't got to yet, I think. We're discussing doing modular ones over on the RPTools forums (WAY too many forums to keep up with!) so that you can start with a blank body, put clothes on, different arm positions, body positions, legs, etc. Won't be anything quick, that's for sure. So until we've ironed out what exactly needs to be done for the basics, I'll keep rendering some commoners.

Right now I'm trying to balance my time between rendering zombies (some of which could be used as commoners), commoners, and my PA pack. Not to mention a real job and RPGing, reading and responding to forums, managing several web sites, etc. Who's idea was this measely 24 hour day anyway??

Great Steel! Thanks for all of your time and talents! I will be looking over at RPGMAPSHARE.COM as I do daily so that I don't miss them as they are released. And thanks for making those fantastic zombies - they will make for a nice horror theme I have in progress.

Thanks again Friend!

Tropguru, I'm modding your old man. What letters/initials should I append
to the file name to credit the source?

These are based on Tropguru's old man token (shown above), and I used Greytale's tavern art pieces for the tray contents (among others, too numerous to mention).

For you Photoshop users, here's a file that works as a do-it-yourself tavern server creation tool. Just enable the layers you want, rearrange the tray contents, and export to PNG. You can choose the hair color (or no hair), the shirt color, and whatever you want on the tray (or leave the tray empty).

Zipped Photoshop file:
Customizable_Tavern_Server_Token.zip

The file was made in Photoshop CS. I'm not sure about forward or backward compatability with other versions of Photoshop.

Please post your creations so that others can enjoy them.

First, a cleaned up and resized version of Steel Rat's art, upon which all of these are based:

Some average Joes:

A chainmail shirt I made:

Some slaves or bare-shirted laborers:
<---Hey, is that Brad Pitt?

Captain Kirk:

Spock:

Scotty, or some ill-fated red-shirt:

OK, so technically these aren't all "commoners", but it's easier to post them all together.

Thanks, everyone.

I'm still holding out hope that others will contribute to this thread. No need
to be a Poser expert, if you can mod some of the figures that Steel Rat, Cecil,
and others have posted.

And has no one found the PSD file I posted useful? I'm not seeing any
additional variants posted.

Actually, I didn't, but Steel Rat was nice enough to do some more renders, and I modded one to make this basic seated pose.

So I was able to make seated versions of all the figures in my last post.

Average Joes:

Chainmail dude:

Slaves or bare-shirted laborers:

And our Trekkie friends:

Nice work Heruca!

I haven't even opened the .psd yet.
Sorry buddy, I have *plans* to do some, I just haven't had time to do anything art related lately.
Real life keeps getting in the way.
If I can manage to squeeze out some free time, I'll try to get some done and up here.

Thanks for the seated versions Buddy,
GTech
