This thread is to describe the weirdest thing that has happened to you this Xmas season. Weird gifts? Unusual customs? New in-laws? Whether at home, work or school.

I'm starting this because I'm pretty sure I win! Any challengers?

So I just got through an hour of rounding potatoes. I didn't think my wife could get any more bizarre, but she said that we couldn't just peel and cut the potatoes as usual. This year they have to be rounded.

And I don't mean taking small rounding potatoes and making them very round. I'm talking about taking big potatoes, cutting them up, then rounding off most of it so it is round. I couldn't make this up.

We may have thrown away half of the potato, but at least I'm sure that no one will be blinded by a pointy potato at supper tonight.

Gotta go, my wife wants me to make sure that the mini baked alaskas in the freezer don't catch a cold.

Don’t know if these count or compete, but it was in the Christmas season I suppose…

Will try to keep this short as I’m no good at telling stories.

Celeb” 20th December: On my way home to Ankara while checking into domestic transfers at Istanbul airport, I blocked the queue to a Turkish gent who was hurriedly, franticly trying to get to the front. Turned out to be İbrahim Tatlises http://www.idobay.com/resim.html the main Turkish actor / singer / heartthrob of the past 2 – 3 decades in Turkey. He was trying to get away from the mob of middle aged women – who then duly mobbed him (thus me) as he couldn’t get passed.

He apologised for pushing in (a true gent) I just went red in the face out of embarrassment for making a pratt of myself with a very famous Turk.

Hijack” 22nd December: On my way to Toys R Us a truck and car was involved in a minor accident and blocked the highway for a while they had a “song and dance” about the accident (normal in Turkey), traffic then backed up behind them and other Turks then joined in the “song and dance” (again normal). The Truck driver was convince by others to move his truck to the side of the road – but once he got moving he decided to make a break for freedom (with the prior knowledge that he had no rear registration plate) – out of the 30 or so cars now parked behind him the 2 owners of the car that was now wrecked needed another a car to chase him with.

God only knows why they chose me; they leapt into my car and “hijacked” me. I had 2 choices…..

1.     Argue the toss with 2 very upset Turks.
2.     Chase the large Turkish truck.

I opted for number 2.

This seemed fine at the time until you try stopping a large fully laden truck with a Seat Cordoba while having 2 excited Turks screaming in your ears. Oodles of fun were had by all swerving in and out of Turkish rush hour traffic on the Eskişir highway.

Anyway that’s my Christmas fun and games so far…. Admittedly no potatoes were involved.

Does this count for the weird things this Christmas?

Ae

Aegean, Is this your typical Turkey afternoon? Or do they usually just pick the car ahead of you?

Oh, and everyone will be happy to know that no one was injured eating our potatoes. There was a somewhat precarious moment when my mother-in-law dropped a rather pointy carrot as she was eating. Everyone held their breath but it simply landed in a pool of gravy and settled in next to a meatball. All's well that ends well.

My wife complained that I didn't make enough potatoes, but that's because we threw half of them away! On the other hand, the Baked Alaska were delicious. And not all of them were eaten...

dDA: Yet another good reason to serve them mashed... or better yet, move on to sweet potatoes!

Aegean: djeez, someone has an active life! Sounds like you need a vacation from the extra-ordinary
