If folks wanted to work with open source code, then I think the Maptool codebase could probably be enhanced to provide additional mapping support.

Development of DJ 2 has been halted until further notice. Not really much more I can tell you all

If open source isn't an attractive option, you could also consider "hiring" a regular user for a nominal fee... Say, a free upgrade to 2.0 when it's available? That's not likely to be enough incentive to get someone to write v2 for you, but you might be able to get some bug fixes and some minor enhancements that way, which would benefit both DJ and the community. It'd also help DJ show signs of progress, postponing the inevitable rise of a new, reasonably-priced competitor...

You guys have a great community here, but their patience is going to run out sooner or later. If DJ doesn't start showing signs of progress soon, someone's going to get fed up and start writing their own software. Hell, I'd do it myself, but I'd much rather toss DJ the cash and focus on building adventures. Time spent coding a mapping tool is time NOT spent creating memorable encounters for my players to get smucked by!

Still say that DJ 2.0 would be good as a GIMP plugin.....

Wow, this is sad news. I bought this program recently, because I started
playing D&D with my kids (hadn't played in many years)... and I wanted to be
able to make some custom maps. The program is great. I am not a graphic
artist... I can barely touch up digital photos, but using this program was
pretty straight forward for me. I hope this program stays around.

Does GIMP (or any other open source graphics program for that matter) have the ability to handle PNG images as objects rather than simply pasting them into a raster layer? If so that would be a good approach. You already would have support for layers, shadows, rotation, I assume there is some kind of brush/picture tube functionality that can be adapted, etc.

I'd buy a Photoshop plug-in that did little more than random placement of artwork for floor and cover sets.

Come to think of it, perhaps there's already some way to automate something like that.

I'm sure you could make them into Brushes for Photoshop (or picture tubes for Paint Shop Pro, or similar solutions for other programs). But it would be better if the tool understood linked sets of PNG files like DJ does (the -a, -b, etc convention).

That and a fill tool that worked with sets of floors would be IMHO the most critical elements.

I would love to see the MapTool drawing
tools improved, but I'm not developer. MapTool is a Java
application, so if anyone is willing to make MapTool
comparable to Dundjinni, I know many MapTool users would be
eternally grateful.

I second that.

Honestly it is time the people behind DunDjinni come clean and tell us what is going on

I think this silence from the owners is unheard of. Why won't they come clean and tell the truth?

I think this lack of information is really bad customer service. I am just so disappointed

If you go that route, try Fractal Mapper 8 first. You'll find that it can do just about everything that CC can on a raster level, it can do some things that CC can't, and it's about as easy to use as Dundjinni. Best of all, you can download the trial version and the full manual free. The trial version is the full version with file saves crippled. It also has less symbols than the full version, but that's no problem, because the DJ user symbols work well in FM8. You also will find that the combination of DJ and FM8 will give you the best of all mapping and dungeon layout worlds.

What make Dundjinni important for me is that it works on Mac OS X, most
other mapping softwares out there are Windows only.

I just found out about this in an email from a different mailing list. Losing DJ would be a huge loss to the gaming community. Whatever the reasons and the results may end up being, I humbly suggest you not close shop without giving fans a real explanation, even if it's one that's painful. Closure is so rarely given out these days. I hope a way can be found to save DJ.

I can sympathize with you! I don't know what experiences people are having with CC3 under LINUX or Mac OSX with emulators, but Fractal Mapper 8 users are getting excellent results running it in LINUX with WINE, However, the prime effort - if there's one that we can make at all - should be to keep Dundjinni going!

As Varl stated, it would be nice if loyal customers could get some official word on what's up.

I'm also a Mac user and would love an update for DJ.

It is ridiculous that this site hasn't been updated in years, yet they are still
happy to take peoples money, without any official support.

The fans here are the only thing keeping Dj going, so perhaps they should
be given the opportunity to take over the project.

I'll look at FP 8 under VM fusion and see if that gives me what I need.

So here's a question... Would the current owner(s) of Dundjinni consider selling the company?

That's what I'm wondering as well. Although, not the company but the "license" to Dundjinni. I'm sure some of us are programmers whether as a hobby or a career and would like to take a project like this on in the future. Can we create our own version of Dundjinni 2?

I've had ideas for Dundjinni if Dundjinni 2 were to ever come out, for example faster rendering and searchable textures.
