Hi,

Dracorat posted a lot of nice top-down figures at MapTools. Take a look over here. I picked the rat swarm and gave it a shadow and made a smaller version.

Absolutely awesome swarm, I don't really get the deep black shadow just right from the center. Looks a little like a flying cat following the swarm. The again it could just be me. But the Swarm looks awesome.

Thanks for the compliments!

The swarm is crawling over itself, so some of the rats are above the others and cast a shadow on them.

Are now I see, sorry for my obvious lack of shadow understanding I really love the way they seem to crawl all over. That should scare my players the next time they enter a sewer.

Would you consider making swarms of spiders, lizards, fire ants etc. Since you have this great talent for arrangeing and organizing object in swarms? That would be very nice

Hmm, what about a swarm of skeletons ...?

Arhh getting the models, I didn't think about that. I understand that they can be quite expensive.
I like the idea about a swarm of skeletons Perhaps a swarm of undead skeleton rats? That could be interesting.
I don't yet fully understand the concepts of 3D art. As I only began to try out a 3D program last week. But if you already have the model for a rat can you then make a skeleton rat?
I think your work is exelent and very useful. I will follow this forum with great interest.

A model of a rat is a mesh of lines that form a 3d model. A texture is added over this mesh to create the skin, with or without bumps. Just compare it to creating a paper-machee doll

So you cannot create a skeleton rat from a normal rat model, since that's a totally different mesh. You can create rats with different skins and in different poses, as much as the model allows you to pose it.

Some models are fixed and can only be rendered in one pose, although you can move the camera around to get a different angle. Models like the rat that was used by Dracorat can be posed, which means the model is devided in parts that can be moved around. If you do it well, you can make the rat do about anything you like

Undead Skeletal rats would be SO cool though I do admit.

But the likelihood someone has designed a rat skeleton is not very high =/.

Ill do some google walking today.

Love this kid of stuff. Thanks Dracorat.

I'm doing a desert campaign so my vote is for a scorpion swarm. My group recently hit a series of beetle swarms which they just hated. The list is endless for what you could do.

Happy swarming...

I'm sure there are individual rats somewhere on this forum, but whenever I try searching for rats this thread is as close as I get.

Could someone please point me in the right direction for individual rats?

I do like the swarm BTW. I'm planning on using that too.

Indeed they are! Don't tell anyone, but that specific post was one of my motivating reasons for doing this swarm - and Steel Rat himself was THE catalyst that turned me on to this type of art.

I've not done anything recently - fighting for my kids, coupled with my first home purchase (how's that for polar opposites?) have kept me buried in other things atm. But, I'll be getting back to more probably around the start of the new year.

And just in case I wasn't specific enough: Steel Rat is awesome.
