Welcome, DevilDan. Way to make an entrance!

I love your figure tokens, and I hope to see more of your great work soon.

If it's not too much work, could you please post a dead/prone Mind-flayer?

Very nice. Love the textures on the ogres.

I would like to see dead poses of the mind flayers also. And dead ogres! I rarely use the topdown tokens but can see myself using dead bodies. Thanks and welcome to DJ.

Thanks, DevilDan. Sweet renders of the ogre, in particular.

Although I have to admit, the first two pairs remind me of those "can you
spot the differences between these two pictures?" puzzles. I had to toggle
back and forth between them to tell that they really were different.

Hi Pedrov!
I'm using DAZ for the 3D models and Photoshop 6 to get the desired effects.
I'll try to explain all the process step by step. If you are familiar with both programs
it should be easy.

DAZ

01) Load a basic model
02) On "Surface" menu select a model part and add the color of your choice.
   (I used a light blue)
03) If it is dressed just repeat the process described above and in the Opacity Menu set it to 50%
04) Render it.

Photoshop

01) In "Layers" menu select the "Blending Options" menu and then select "Outer Glow".
02) In "Structure" menu choose the same color you used in the model and in "Elements" menu
use Spread 10-20 and Size 10-20.
03) Go to the "Blending Options: Default" menu set the transparency to 40% - 60%.

It's done.

(Sorry about my english)

I haven't seen many unicorns, so this sunday I'm posting a simple set of unicorns. No big deal for sure!

And the .zip 2AB_Unicorns.zip

Next sunday I'll try to post more than one creature set.
Cryogenes asked me for some angels so I'm workin on Solar Angels

If you don't know how does a Solar Angel look like the description is just below

"The creature resembles a towering powerfully built human with brilliant topaz eyes, silvery (or
golden) skin and gleaming white wings"

Ooops

Some misunderstanding here...

I was asking for some other angles not for some angels. At least I think I did.

Angles, in the sense that the camera is put at a different point. I prefer views from the front or the side to views from the top.

But the angel is very nice

But since this is a commercial site that doesn't want to get into trouble with WotC or other publishers, copyrighted images cannot be posted here.

Of course I've got to ask a dumb question and really don't want to thread jack but anyone have any idea of where a list of copyrighted and non-copyrighted monsters can be found?

I've played around with some and would hate to end up doing any that couldn't be used.

Well none of the ones I requested are not in the SRD.

Slaadi are common examples of creatures not in the SRD.

Slaadi, Beholders, Displacer Beasts, Mind Flayers, and Kou-Toa arn't in the SRD because they're Wizards' IP (trademarks of D&D, etc.). There's a few more, but a lot of other core D&D critters (Sahugin, Ankheg, Remorhaz, Balor, even Drow) are in the SRD, and thus are Open Game Content.

When in doubt, check with the Hypertext SRD. Everything listed there is Open Game.

Dats right, next we need this anal probe like creature (or maybe he looks more like a suppository). We also need em demonic looking bird-man and orange-headed black-skinned big guy.

This copyright stuff really sucks. Anyway, thank you forumLurker for the link. The list is very useful.

nidae213, I've followed your suggestions and changed some of the previews posts, now we have brain Sucking Octomen and Phase Beasts.

dDemonicAngels, it's still saturday in my country.

These are absolutely terrific!

I hope someday you can do for humans what you've done for orcs, so we can start staging some serious mass combats.

Edit: I've made some fallen and upright standards from your renders:

Stellar collection. Love those orcs!

I agree with Heruca, would be nice to have some standard human/demihuman infantry to use against the orc threat.

Thanks for the hydras!

Man oh man, DD you just keep throwing them at us.
Seriously you have given me a great new reason to look forward to the weekends.
My players love to fight your creatures in our online battlegrounds game.
Please don't ever stop, or if you ever do, please make the withdrawel really really slow as to ease the the pain for us DD creature addicts.
Great Hydras or Many headed reptile beings (if WOTC is copyrighting Hydras )

Please update the zipfiles something is wrong with them

Thanks again for making our games better

You can't copyright something from Greek Mythology!

Though, since WotC is trying to copyright "constructible strategy games" even though Pirates has been out for what, three years? ...

Hi guys!

The Hydra Post is fixed now.
Check it again!
Now there are direct links to .PNGs.

A friend of mine gave me a tip about what happens to the .ZIPs.
When I upload files to the Dundjinni Forums these are automatically renamed and a prefix is added to it (i.e.: Hydra01_DD.zip becomes 6ZSHydra01_DD.zip).
When a file is zipped in multiple volumes the zip extractor looks for it's original name, but due to the upload process, in wich the file is renamed, the program can't find the correct name and says the file is corrupted.
To solve the problem you have to rename them to their original names.

Hope it works for you all!!

You can't copyright something from Greek Mythology!

Though, since WotC is trying to copyright "constructible strategy games" even though Pirates has been out for what, three years? ...
~lurker~

No of cource you can't copyright something from old greek mythology, what was I thinking , reminds me that I'm going to greece in august, I got to brush up on my greek history

But WOTC are probably even worse than the old T$R, so they would probably try.

Fabulous work Dan, looking forward to snagging the next ones already. I'm not sure how you did the angels but if it's not too difficult could we get a version with opaque wings?

Also, fanart of copyrighted characters, races or creatures is totally legal (if it wasn't DeviantArt would lose 1/2 its content). And just because it's top-down doesn't mean it's not "fanart" right? (Disclaimer: IANAL, TINLA)

Well, it can be done.
A lot of people request me specific creatures and I really want to attend them but I don't have enough time to do all the work I would like to do.

Anyway, I'll try however I can't promise to post it soon.
Really sorry.

How about the gorgon (I mean metallic looking ox).

For the minotaur. Is it possible for you to setup a winged minotaur with those regular minotaurs? (One of my players plays one and will be dead shocked when he sees a winged minotaur on the map instead of the crappy square I represent him with.)

No problem, I was hoping it was just a matter of sliding the opacity scale but wasn't sure. If you get time for it, great, if not, it's no big deal, they're great as they are.

@Cryogenes: I'd been getting that message too and wondering why, apparently the forum tied my avatar URL to the web proxy I was using when I registered, even though it's a default avatar! Very strange, but it should be fixed now, as I've edited the avatar and don't currently have to use a proxy. Thanks for pointing it out

Nothing to worry about btw, whether you've declined or accepted; kproxy is trustworthy but has a problem with their server addresses (server3.kproxy.com for example) not being matched properly to their certificate (issued to www.kproxy.com). Hoping they'll fix that, as it certainly is annoying.

EDIT: Oh, and I almost forgot, my vote's for the minotaur too, although the Gorgon does look great so far (Gorgon race is copyright it's owner(s), this post made without their approval or consent, and should not be construed as constituting a challenge to their rights. Azrael is not affiliated in any way with the copyright holder(s) )

Yes Faebinder, Gorgon is a Greek Mythical creature, however a think the traditional description of gorgons do not match the one of a metalic bull. Maybe the association of gorgon name and the image of a metalic bull are copyrighted.
I've also checked the hypertext d20 mosnter's list (thanks to lurker) and gorgon is there, so I supposed it's ok to do fan art with them.

It looks to me like the metal bull in the film production (Hallmark?) of Jason and the Argonauts. Any connection? Don't know the story well.

@Faebinder: I'm aware there is a mythological Gorgon, but it is much different to what D&D terms a "Gorgon", which was the creature DD was working on. Compare your link to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gorgon_(Dungeons_&_Dragons)

As far as I know the metal-bull "Gorgon" is a creation of D&D contributers, but I'm not sure on that; it may be based in or inspired by myth (not too familiar with the Jason myth myself).

The remark was really more a joke than anything though, since as I pointed out regardless of the copyright status original fanart falls under fair use doctrines. You might consider a similar "disclaimer" though Dan, you can post as many Illithids as you like as long as you give fair use-consistent credit ;)

And since I didn't say it before (although it probably should go without saying) excellent Hydras, very much snagged!

The problem is that art posted here can be used for commercial purposes, unless stated otherwise. I doubt that still falls under the fair use policy.

Yep, if you look under the fair use clause it specifically states non-commercial use. Posting on a website counts as commercial use, as does posting it on a website with a "commercial-use only unless otherwise noted" clause.

Fair use is something of a misnomer--it gives you limited rights to use something someone else made without the need to request permission, circumventing copyright, but only in limited areas where it would be inane to toe the strict copyright line. As the fair use clause itself states: "...for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright." Sadly, making RPG maps with Beholders is not counted under fair use. Fan art, along with "similar" depections of non-SRD monsters (such as Reaper Mini's Phase Cat and Floating Eye), fall under a different grey area than fair use.

Surely (and this is a moral argument as opposed to a legal one - I realise that it wouldn't stand up against the legality of things should copyright holders object) by producing RPG maps, commercially or non-commercially, and helping each other to do so, we are not competing directly with Wizards (at least not directly, anyway), but promoting their products?

I'd hate to hijack Dan's very enjoyable thread with a copyright discussion; would it be appropriate to move this discussion to a new thread, or perhaps the existent "no copyrighted art" sticky (before it gets more than a few posts long)?

Kepli wrote:

That's very right, I hadn't really stopped to think about it, but anything based on copyrighted works indeed cannot be used commercially, thus any art here that fits that description should be labeled "non-commercial use only". For that matter, as I understand it, the d20 license doesn't allow for commercial work either, so anything derived from a d20-licensed work should be similarly marked.

forumLurker wrote:

This isn't necessarily true, it depends on the nature of the website, what copyrighted material you're using, how it's being used, etc. To my understanding, anything posted to Dundjinni's User Art forum would be considered non-commercial, as it's basically fanart and is comparable to fanart, fanfiction, doujinshi, etc., which are regularly posted on websites both personal and depository (ie DeviantArt, Fanfiction.net, etc.). And, as long as the art itself is original, the copyrighted portions are properly attributed, and the stuff isn't sold, such items would also be considered non-infringing, that is a "fair use". You're quite right that the statute doesn't really cover this; unfortunately most of "fair use" law is found in previous rulings, rather than being statutory. That's a big reason the area's so gray. Despite the limited wording of the statute, the scope of the law is considered to cover anything and everything that is derivative but isn't infringing.

Ultimately I'm pretty sure the safest course of action with this stuff is to label anything derivative of a copyrighted work as being derivative, include as much info as possible on the copyright holder, and label it "non-commercial only". Calling a Gelugon an "insectoid ice demon" probably wouldn't help much if Wizards came knocking.

Again, though, IANAL (though I have researched the subject a fair deal... unfortunately *groan*) and this stuff is ultimately up to the Dundjinni folks as they carry the liability. My limited expertise is also all in US law, and I'm not sure to what extent that applies to you folks depending where the servers are hosted, where the offices are located, etc. Might be something to think about though, if this specific issue hasn't already been addressed with legal reps and/or within the company.

My only concern is making sure the company and community are protected and as much as can be legally shared is available, by the way. I haven't been here long but I greatly enjoy it here and the forum's an invaluable resource. So, sorry to be a wet blanket, especially as a new guy. Copyright discussions aren't much fun but unfortunately I've seen a lot of them.

So have we on this forum Azrael
Those discussions are never fun, but most of the time people understand the need to be careful on a commercial site like this one. We pefer to see only "for commercial use" art on here, since that won't confuse people (like me, since I also create commercial maps )

And now let's get back to the creatures

I agree, posing is not just moving the limbs around, but also finding the right lighting, scale and a lot of other possible settings to create this kind of render ... very impressive work

Thank you all guys!

3D models help a lot, although I make custom textures to apply over the 3D models. The textures sometimes give me a lot of work and I always do post edition in Photoshop to correct all the little problems on the renders images.

I have a few objects made only in Photoshop (not renders) and I will post them someday. I'm focused at moment on the creatures renders and posts. I think they are very useful and there is a lack of these on this forums.

I absolutely agree, there is a serious lack of these on this forum.

Thank you very much for your hard work

The lack of creatures is mostly due to the fact that when printing a map, you often don't like to have these already on there. You can't move them around once they are printed on the map
That's also why you will find a lot of dead versions of creatures on here and why you will always get the request for dead versions. Those can be static on a map

See but that's because people are not thinking of how other people use the creatures. It seems most people here utilize Dundjinni for table-top maps. I am one of those that utilizes Dundjinni for my online game and the map is essential for them in fights. Having creatures important, otherwise I am cutting and pasting some half picture from WOTC website.

If you start producing more of the creatures, then more people who play online post by post or online chat games will start utilizing the software. I think you are limiting the software if you are only going to try and please only one group of people (those who use it for table top).

At this time, the online gaming community is growing fast, but was non-existing when this site started. I think the number of people playing online and visiting this site has reached an important level for DJ now. We must focus on that public as well
Right now I think we could use a new subforum just for creatures, aiming for the online gaming public. Since we are currently redoing the whole site, we won't do that in these forums though. I will suggest this change for the new forums

I love the idea of a "Characters and Creatures" subforum on the new site.

I am one of those people who use DJ maps for my online games,(big claps to Heruca, we just started using his software and love it), and I and my players find the top down views of creatures to be of immense value to our game. I just wish for more.

When i play normal table top RPG I also put creatures on my DJ GM maps, that way I don't have to think about were a creature is placed in a room when we get out the old fashioned minis , and it also allowes me to think out the strategy for the encounters, when I can see on the map
where all the creatures are at the beginning.

Agreed, more stellar work Dan, thank you so much for it. As a virtual table top-er good tokens are really important and while there is a limited selection here most of it's very good (and your work in this thread's not exactly hurting!) Texture work is a pain, posing might not be child's play but I'd much rather pose than texture... goes to show how much work everyone here puts into their stuff

Any hints on what's coming up? If you're taking suggestions were-creatures are a good one. I'd also love to see some round, one-eyed creatures. You know, like the ones in Doom or Rifts... ;) Not many of those around and they seem to be hard to get in right top-down view (but if anyone's up to the challenge...)

Great idea Kepli! I don't know how far away the new forums are, but it might be something to consider even now. Tokens are a BIG draw for us VTT folks, and DJ's forums are a big advantage over competitors!

That's a really good idea, one of the things I love about VTTs is the ability to have things all set up beforehand, this is a great way to replicate that effect face-to-face

It really works for me

As a GM I really enjoy inventing tactics for the creatures my players encounter. There is almost nothing as funny as watching the players faces, when they are really struggeling with some weak opponents, that they would normaly have absolutely no problem defeating. A lot of low level creatures can be very menacing when they apply the right strategy. I would not be able to plan my encounters with that level of strategy if I could not place the creatures on my maps in advance

: Oh it only 6 orc archers behind a low wall, lets slaughter them.
: Yes lets get the....arhh
: Ohhhh **** we just lost the dwarf to the hidden pit trap.
: Uhh guys take care where you step.
: Ohh ok were past the pit traps run for them.
: Arr "crash" this grass is slippery and it smells like oil I think I hurt my leg.
: **** back back they have fire arrows. RUN.
: Ups we can't pass the pit traps while running.
: ARRRRR the fire is getting past my armour.

Hello everyone -

Dan thanks for the great creatures! I do have a problem downloading the minotaurs though - the only ones out of the set. I can download the zip file - but then my computer refuses to read the individual PNG files and it won't let me pull them into a BRPG or DJ folder. Strange. I dont know if there is some kind of copy protection on the individual files? I have tried dl'ing them with both IE and FF.

As for requests - I'd love to see some Umber Hulks...or even a Bulette...one of my old favorites. Though I dont know if they are considered proprietary...

EDIT: It looks like Umber Hulks are proprietary...maybe I should call it a Brown Juggernaut?

Make sure to check out the token packs at Four Ugly Monsters too

Hmm, I can open the zip and put the Minotaurs in folders just fine

I have the exact same problem.
Could they be posted as individual PNGs please. Or perhaps try to upload them again in a new zipfile.

I had that problem when I first tried to unzip the files using MacOS X's
built-in unzipping utility (BOMArchiveHelper). Then I tried using StuffIt
Expander 10.0 (it's free to download) and it unzipped just fine.

Well I have to agree, but when you place, for example, a bench on a map the player can't move it around the room, so it also makes the map static! Doesn't it?

Guys, it's my plan do make top down tokens of all D&D monsters and it may take months, maybe an year.

For some monsters, the more complex ones, there are no available models, so I will have to develop my own models and it's gonna be a hard time!

To post nice creatures I also have to make custom textures and it takes time too. My free time is really scarce so I can't post every sunday, it's getting just impracticable.

I'm not stopping just slowing down.

That's a pretty lofty goal you've set for yourself, DD.

But an admirable one.

And if you can do even half of Monster Manual 1, you'll be making a lot of people very, very happy.

Oh man I really hope you do, there must be thousands of creatures in the D&D books
It will be an immense task, but one well worth commiting oneself to. I just wish I had an ounce of your 3D talent so that I could help you.
But I for one will be the first to offer you my outmost moral support on your journey to become the brightest star in the world of creature makers.
Please don't hesitate to ask questions I'm sure this community will rally to your cause.

Oh crap, I looked at it.

In the future, please post such creatures in zip format only. We don't want
the entire DJ userbase turning to stone.

All kidding aside, great stuff, as usual, DD. This is one creature I never
expected to see a top-down token for.

This cockatrice is awesome!

It could also pass for a drake in my MERP campaign.

Great stuff again! I'm really curious about the lighting or shaders you're using. They seem to be a great fit for the style of art, a cross between cartoon and realistic, used for most of the objects and maps here.

Awesome DD...

Ya bigger is better, you can always reduce its size on Dundjinni but enlarging is limited to 400% and it doesnt look that great when made big.

Wow solid work man.

Thanks pedrov. I'm using DAZ3D ambient light (I think it's the default light). The rendered image is always dull, so I do post edition in Photoshop and set bright and contrast to 20 of bright and 45 of contrast. Sometimes I increase (or decrease) saturation.
Does it answer your curiosity?

I'm not sure why are you asking this cuz I think your renders are awesome and they fit pretty well too!

Oh, I almost forgot ... the larger versions of cockatrices

worth the extra effort.

Great new pieces! And thanks for the tip! I like the style I use, it's just a bit off for the colorful pop that many of the objects here have... too muted or something. I really like the style of your pieces so I'll definitely be giving those settings a try soon.

Okay, I am sucking up right now because I am going to ask for something once I've done the compliment, but: This is my favourite thread on this forum - great work!

And now that the sucking up is done, comes the request: What about doing some various D&D demons? I am still sorely in need of that vrock . . .

Ok Oistene, I think a Vrock can be done, but not so soon. I'm working on other creatures projects and your demon might have to wait until december. I'm only one and I'm doing these monsters on my free time. I would love to attend your request right now but is just impossible. Sorry!
Have you ever seen Pedrov's Succubus? It's a wonderful demon. There are a lot of other demons renders on this forum and they are all great! You should look for.
Anyway, I'll start some demons projects, ok?

Kepli, did you get my answer to your message?

Now to the creature post.
This time I'm posting two creatures sets. The first one is the ooze set. There are Black Puddings and Ochre Jellys. The second set is the first of four skeletons sets. I will try to post the other three next week.
Enjoy!

Thanks Dan, I'm in no rush. I know I'll be needing many demons as my campaign progresses, but not all of them at once. I've picked up numerous great demons from the forums (including pedrov's succubus), but some of the more D&D-specific nasties are harder to find. Just keep up the good work!

I still think rendering them with a different skin and other attributes would be better

Mountain Giant

Jungle Giant

Fire Giant

Nice mods Kep.

I'm working on my fire giant version, it's almost finished!

Is the rainbow giant a gay giant?

So many monster so little time!

Guys, gimme some feedback on the creatures you need, I'll try to do my best to make them.

Oistene, I've just started the work on the vrock model, but it's a hard one. It will take a time to get finished.

Faebinder, when I started the fire giant project it was dark skinned. If you prefer I can post another set with dark skinned giants.

Please dont hold back.. put them darkskinned boys up.. that's their classic look.. darkskinned.. like the rest of the underdark themed critters... But the fire-pink color you are using is pretty good too.. So thank you.

Hey Kepli, you think you can make that jungle giant have green hair and beard instead of white? That would be perfect.

Some mods of DevilDan's fantastic Frost Giant corpse, to make it suitable for a human corpse (if you shrink it down):

DD, do you have any gnolls, kobolds, hobgoblins or bugbears coming out in
the near future? We could use some of the more commonly-encountered
"cannon-fodder" figures.

You are right, these types of creatures are much more needed. Actually I was working on these creatures when Oistene asked me to create the Vrock. But don't worry there'll be gnolls, kobolds and bugbears soon.

Looooove the vrocks! Thanks a bunch, Dan They are so much better than the one I snagged from Never Winter Nights to get by - this one actually looks like a vrock. I'll be using these a lot. Probably a lot more than my players will appreciate.

I browsed around in this thread a while, and suddenly I discovered that there were actually creatures I hadn't downloaded before! Thanks for the lamias, Dan!

However, I also noticed that I had none of the hydra versions, and I also discovered why: The downloads do not work. Also, I see that you've made a great gorgon, but never posted it except for a .JPG preview. Have all these creatures been eaten by the copyright monster?

There shouldn't be any copyright issue with a Gorgon, since it's a creature
from mythology.

I thought the Hydra zips were fixed and reposted.

They didn't work (neither the originals nor ther pyro/cyro versions) when I tried to download them earlier today. Since I can swear that I tried to download them once before when I first came here, they might not have worked at that time either.

Why not download the free user art-pack from the user art page? It contains the hydra versions

Try downloading the entire artpack from here:
http://www.dundjinni.com/art/user_art.asp

Then you should be able to pull out the hydras for your collection.

Note: I haven't tried this myself, since I downloaded everything piecemeal.

Unfortunately, the following artpacks, though free to download, are in DJ's
proprietary djx format, so they can't be used outside of DJ.

Hammerfall
Darkness' Campaign
User Collection 1
User Collection 2

I'm not sure what the point was of copy-protecting the free stuff, and I wish
those artpacks could be re-released in PNG format.

The storage server went down, that's why the links to the .pngs are not working anymore.
Does anybody knows a good and free place to store big files?

Thanks

These are all awesome DD. Absolutely Awesome.

Can I make a suggestion though, and not to be a stickler, but I am concerned about the length of this thread and what might happen to it. You know computers and servers. Crash bang oops we cann restore all but the really long threads.

Can you start a new thread when you create a new creature? Just a request.

Sounds like a good idea to me, but if you do this, could you maybe start it off with "DevilDan's Creatures:" or something?

Hmm, nice thinking Darkness. Also means I can create new user-packs per thread. Just post between 10-15 new creatures in a thread and I will make each a new user-pack

Devil Dan, I was not able to download the Hydras or the Chimeras. Is there perhaps another place I can get these from? These are awesome by the way, you have spent a lot of time on them!

Wow these are amazing. Keep up the great work.

I do have a minor request at this time. When trying to download the PNG's of the Hydra and Chimera it said that there were too many connections. Is it possible to put this up in zipped packages like the other monsters? Those gave me no trouble downloading.

Can't wait to use these monsters in dungeons for my battle maps and such :D

See that the last post was 1st of Januari. So that is a while back. Hopefully this amazing thread can be kicked back into action some how ;)

The Hydra is in the first large user-art Creatures pack. I think the Chimera is also in there ... Just scroll down a bit

Hey, I think one of DevilDan's excellent creatures is
missing from the Fantastic Creatures packs -- the
skeleton on page 24, to be precise.

By the way, did his Gorgon ever surface?

Both creature art packs won't extract properly. I've downloaded them both 4 times now.

All of the creatures posted in this thread are now available in an artpack for Battlegrounds (my virtual tabletop program). Click here for details, and to view contact sheets of all the monsters.

I'd like to revive this topic badly, but I know the job is
a pain in the neck for artists to suite requests all the
time, and I'm really looking forward to the entire D&D
collection if DD ever finishes it, love all the prone
renders and stuff absolutely amazing work, and I'd really
love to see a snake hair lady and a metal ox, my camp is severely lacking creatures but this thread helped me tons
and I'd love to see that half-human half giant spider
thingy, upper torso of a human and lower body of a spider,
grand total 10 limbs and arms, please don't flame me for
necro posting

No worries Indestructible, we understand your enthusiasm.

DD did some amazing work, but unfortunately he has been MIA for over a year.
Maybe he will return someday.

Oh, well sorry to hear that or rather "Read" that. I wish
we had some more great creature artists like him. He
inspired me enough to at least "attempt" to make some of my
own 3D's and hopefully I can pick up on his giant steel ox
idea if I can get the hang of things on the graphics side.

Indestructible.

He once told me he was working on more tokens, but then "disappeared"
again.
