Great tutorial! This was exactly what I was looking for. The only thing is that when I delete the freehand selected area to let the original layer show through it doesn't really blend around the edges of the selection like it does in the tutorial pics, it just kinda cuts it out making a very defined line of shadow and no shadow. I'm new at using Gimp so sorry if there's a pretty obvious answer to this, which I'm sure there is, but how would I go about making the edges of the selection blend with the other layer?

I believe Cisti didn't mention you have to use a Feather function before pressing delete for a selection. In Photoshop that can be done pressing CTRL-ALT-d when you have a selection. Test it a few times with different feather sizes to see what you like best.
