I finally figured out what I needed to do in The GIMP to get the shadow, but I think the shadow is a bit small. Tell me what you think.

I made the accident of saving after flattening and closing the program before fixing the issue. If someone knows how to make the shadow a litte bigger without starting over again, you are welcome to do so.

If I did it right (save for the shadow which I think I'll do 10-15 pixels instead of 5 next time), I have about 50+ pictures of herbs and various powders to extend the alchemist items. Just not sure how much of an interest it would be since we have quite a bit to use.

If there is enough interest, I will try to make some more or lend the file I have to someone more expeirenced at it to make them.

Honestly, I really like that as-is. I'm not normally terribly keen on images with actual photos used (which the herbs look like), but that works really well. Amazingly so, actually. And the cloth was a good choice for a complementary texture to set them off.

All that said, I'd like to see more. I'd also like to see the herbs without the cloth; you mentioned having a bunch - are they pieces you've done, or something that was floating around here?

Finally, onto the "extra shadow" thing, I pulled down the file and dropped it on a few different table-style textures to see how it works. I didn't mind the size of the shadow, but it did come off a bit abrupt, so I modified it for a bit more of a fade instead of for size. Does this help at all?

Yeah, that looks a lot better. That is what I was going for.

Now, the picture I did use were the herbs already on the cloth. It was a cook art site where they had a lot of pre-arranged herbs on various materials.

A lot of the pictures I have are just the base herb or base ground herb ona white or cream colored background. If shrunk, most of the details get smaller and more indistiguishable(sp?) from the larger. Which, I think, helps in making it look like it's at some distance.

Since it's late here, I'll try and make a few more tomorrow and see what comes of it. Thanks for your input. :D

Looks great and Terraism's innovation with the drop shadow improved it as well. Nice job.

Fantastic first post, don't worry to much about your drop shadow as items that sit on tables and such can look a bit odd sometimes with too much drop.

Awesome first post! I really like them, and as Aegean says, don't worry too much about the dropshadow.

I'd love to see more of this stuff. It can be used in a witches lair or just any kitchen, not just an alchemist's lab.

Okay, here are some of the red berries/seeds I had found. I didn't resize it seeing as it might have multiple uses, but resizing it for any use seems to look fine to me. :)

Again, if the shadow needs to be darker, feel free to do so. I think this one is okay. I followed some advice and decided to not make it too dark, so I blurred the shadow stronger to make the shadow more dispersed.

Am I going in the right direction?

I'm not an expert, but I would recommend decreasing the radius of the shadow for this object.

It's definitely not too dark, just too much shadow overall.

Okay, I played with the red seeds and here is the second try. I think it looks better and I scaled it some. Am I right at putting he dpi at 200?

And here is another. It looks like a couple of stalks from a flowering plant of some sort. I scaled it down since the priginal picture was low resolution and really poorly taken. :(

edit: The second images had a cropped shadow. Fixed it.

The second batch of seeds is really great - I'd leave them just like that. They look good. The stalk is neat, too, but a little grainy - maybe it'd be clearer if it was scaled down, too? And you may want to enlarge the canvas on it a little bit so that the shadow isn't cut off. But I like!

The picture was tiny and somewhat grainy to begin with. I scaled it down so the majority of the grain would be removed, but I'm very pleased to know that some people are enjoying these. Thank you for your compliments!

Since i think I understand what I am doing now, I'll see if I can knock out 10-15 and put them in a zip/rar for you all. That way, I don't flood the thread with many pictures and make those on slower connections choke on the speed.

Also, what would be the best way to make a contact sheet? I would like to show everyone exactly what's there. :) Again, thanks a bunch for the advice and help! I am so happy to be able to contribute back. :D

Those red seeds look great after the adjustment to the shadow!

Nice job!

Very much so - these are really handy pieces, whether for kitchens, labs, witchery, or a bunch of other variations on the theme. Looking forward to seeing your upcoming bunch.

I've been doing my contact sheets in Photoshop - there's a handy tool included that'll make them. I haven't tried doing so in GIMP, but a quick search turned up this, which seems to be a GIMP plugin alternative. You may want to give that a try.
